Biodiversity Mapping Project (BMaP)
Shawanaga First Nation is one of over 40 partners to join Mnidoo Gamii Georgian Bay Biosphere in the generation of high-quality habitat data used to create decision-support tools that will help us understand regional habitats and land management needs.
Shawanaga’s Role in the BMaP Project
Shawanaga will be sending out Lands department staff along with community members & support from GBB staff throughout the 2026 and 2027 active seasons. Our focus is using the mapping tools provided improve land management of interest areas communicated by the community and band. These may include areas of developmental interest, sensitive habitats, or habitats with cultural or medicinal plants that need protection. Shawanaga First Nation will retain full ownership of all data in accordance with the First Nation Principles of OCAP (ownership, control, access, and possession).
Shawanaga members can earn $200/day walking in the bush with GBB & SFN Lands staff. Email Jay at sarleadtech@shawanagafirstnation.ca for more info.
Members are also welcome to provide feedback or suggest target areas for mapping. *We will also be hosting sessions to facilitate feedback and amplify community voices in fall of 2026.
