Shawanaga First Nation: Indigenous-Led Bat Conservation in Georgian Bay
Shawanaga First Nation has been at the forefront of Indigenous led bat conservation work for the last 5 years. Starting in the heart of the community for monitoring, roost counts and acoustics, we have expanded to multiple large and ground breaking projects such as the regional multi-community project, Apakwaanaajiinh Mnidoo Gamii (Bats of Georgian Bay), and the Bat Tunnel project where we have confirmed the first handful of hibernation sites known in eastern Georgian Bay.

The Bat Tunnels: Hidden Havens Beneath The Rails
Shawanaga First Nation has been studying the use and occupancy of tunnels under the railway for multiple years. After multiple seasons we have come across dozens of tunnel structures, and have confirmed the first hibernation sites for eastern Georgian Bay. We are now working to ensure protection and mitigation of these important sites.
