What is a community knowledge survey?
The purpose of a community knowledge survey is to have a direct way to have Shawanaga's voice heard during the assessment of species-at-risk.
What is COSSARO?
COSSARO (Committee on the Status of Species at Risk in Ontario) is established under the Endangered Species Act, 2007, as an independent body that assesses, and classifies species at risk in Ontario. Species assessments are based on the best available information, including scientific information and information obtained from community knowledge and Indigenous Knowledge.
The Committee invites Indigenous peoples, stakeholders, and the public to share their comments and perspectives on the species to be assessed by the Committee. Information on abundance, distribution and threats to the species being assessed is particularly helpful. Any comments, perspectives, or other information, such as Indigenous Knowledge, would be welcome, and may be shared through written submissions or a 10-minute presentation to the Committee. You can also submit information that suggests a species not on the priority list may be at imminent risk of disappearing from Ontario.
COSSARO recognizes that the assessment of these species will benefit from the respectful consideration and application of Indigenous Knowledge, perspectives, and practices.
